Allulose

Allulose is a natural sugar substitute that can be used in various foods and beverages. It is a low-calorie sweetener that provides a similar taste to sugar, but with fewer calories. It is found naturally in small quantities in some fruits. And it can also be produced through a process that converts regular sugar (glucose) into allulose.

One of the main benefits of allulose is that it does not significantly affect blood sugar levels. It has a low glycemic index, making it suitable for individuals with diabetes or those looking to control their blood sugar. Additionally, it is not metabolized by the body in the same way as regular sugar, so it contributes fewer calories.

While it is considered safe for most individuals, it is worth noting that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. However, in typical usage and moderation, allulose is generally well-tolerated.

Baking with Allulose

Allulose can be used as a replacement for sugar in various recipes, including baking, cooking, and beverages. It provides a similar level of sweetness but with about one-tenth of the calories of sugar. It also has a clean, sweet taste without any aftertaste or bitterness commonly associated with some artificial sweeteners.

In terms of availability, allulose is increasingly being used in a range of products, including baked goods, confections, beverages, and dairy products. It is approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status.

Furthermore, at 0 grams of sugar, per cup vs. 200 grams of sugar in a cup of granulated sugar, it is an alternative that is worth looking into. I found it to be a much finer texture than traditional granulated sugar, which is great in beverages.

However, the cost is something to consider as I have found it to be on the very expensive side of the scale. WHOLESOME Organic allulose by Whole Earth Brands is what I purchased, from my local grocery store, HEB. Overall, I find it to be a great substitute in my tea and coffee.

Kitchen Hack: Shop for Allulose online, specifically, on Amazon. Shopping online will give you a wider variety of sizes and prices. You will save money by shopping online vs. purchasing the one or two options that may be available at your local market.
